Description: This landscape painting depicts Ontario trees at the approach of autumn. Nyilasi was intrigued by the bare tree in the foreground. Its stark outline created a compositional counterbalance to the mass of surrounding vegetation, and in this painting, it becomes a meditative focal point as it is the essence of a tree’s form. If the viewer perceives the tree as dead, this is foreshadowing the future of all plant life. And if the viewer believes that it has dropped its leaves early and only has a few remaining on its branches, he or she will interpret this as foreshadowing the dormancy of approaching winter. The gray sky contributes to a sense of foreboding, thereby creating thematic unity. This painting was created “plein air” by Tibor Nyilasi on one of his artistic excursions into the countryside near his home city, Hamilton, Ontario. Rockton is a community quite close to Hamilton and has a population of 150.
