This composition is based on sketches and observations made in Pearson International Airport, Toronto. Nyilasi liked to include the store logo “Yak” in his airport depictions. (See upper left corner.) The “Yak Mobile” service would sell mobile phone SIM cards. (“Yak” – word play on “chat”.) While creating this composition, Nyilasi would have been reflecting on his own arrival to Canada as a refugee immigrant in 1956.
This huge painting is matched with NYIL-236 “Airport Arrivals”, which is, in contrast, very small.
Further matches include TNYIL-473 “In the Terminal” (watercolour) (2002).
