The smooth, bland surfaces of these rectangular-shaped beach stones are equally complemented by their bland colour. This seems to reflect the fact that these stones have been the passive, stoic victims of glaciers and waves over the course of millennia.
In contrast, the sharply-cut mosaic tesserae which weave around them reflect the work of human hands: active, deliberate, creating deliberate form and beauty. Art which must be created in the short span of time before mortal life reaches its end.
